Pune, 30th May 2026: Thousands of Pune residents faced difficulties on Saturday after the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) property tax portal crashed twice due to heavy traffic, just one day before the deadline to avail of special rebates on property tax payments.

“Due to the large number of citizens opting for online tax payment, the PMC server experienced heavy load. As a result, the website slowed down twice during the day. However, the portal resumed normal operations after some time. No decision has been taken yet regarding an extension of the deadline. Since the Model Code of Conduct is in force, a decision will be taken on Monday after discussions with the Municipal Commissioner,” said Omprakash Divte, Additional Municipal Commissioner, PMC.

With the rebate scheme set to end on May 31, a large number of property owners opted to pay their taxes online, resulting in an unprecedented surge in traffic on the civic body’s official property tax website. The sudden increase in user activity put immense pressure on the server, causing the portal to slow down and eventually become inaccessible on two occasions during the day.

The disruption left many citizens unable to complete their transactions. Several users reported failed or incomplete payments, forcing them to make repeated attempts. The technical issues triggered frustration among taxpayers, with many taking to social media and filing complaints with the civic administration.

PMC offers a rebate of 5% to 10% to property owners who pay their annual property tax in full before the prescribed deadline. As the final date approaches, citizens have increasingly preferred online payment methods to avail themselves of the benefit.

In response to the outage, PMC officials said technical teams were working on a war footing to restore and stabilise the portal. The administration appealed to citizens not to panic and to try making payments again after some time.

To ensure that taxpayers are not inconvenienced, PMC has also made alternative payment arrangements. Citizens can pay their property tax at nearby civic facilitation centres, authorised bank collection centres, and through various digital payment options.

According to the PMC Tax Assessment and Collection Department, the rebate scheme has received an overwhelming response. Over the past 58 days, the civic body has collected more than ₹1,090 crore in property tax revenue from 5,77,497 property owners.

Of the total collections, 1,01,399 taxpayers paid ₹93 crore through cash transactions, while 66,061 taxpayers contributed ₹301 crore through other payment modes. A majority of the payments were made online, with 4,10,055 taxpayers paying ₹695 crore through digital channels.

With May 31 being the last day to avail of the rebate, the technical glitches on the portal have added to the anxiety of taxpayers attempting to complete payments before the deadline.
Meanwhile, PMC is yet to decide whether the rebate deadline will be extended in view of the technical difficulties faced by citizens.
