Four Pune Rural Policemen Suspended Over Alleged Links to Accused in Spurious Liquor Tragedy
Pune, 1st June 2026: The investigation into the spurious liquor tragedy that claimed at least 18 lives in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad has widened, with the Pune Rural Police suspending four personnel for their alleged links with the case’s prime accused.
Pune Rural Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill on Monday ordered the suspension of four policemen after a preliminary inquiry found that they were in contact with the main accused, Radheshyam Prajapati, who is alleged to be involved in the manufacture and distribution of the toxic country liquor.
The suspended personnel include Subhash Doiphode from the Daund Deputy Superintendent of Police’s office, police constable Ajit Shivaji Kale and constable Sumit Nandkumar Wagh attached to the Uruli Kanchan police station, and constable Ramdas Dnyandeo Jagtap from Yavat police station.
According to police officials, Prajapati, a resident of the Uruli Kanchan area, was found to have been in contact with the four policemen. A preliminary inquiry conducted through the Additional Superintendent of Police, Baramati Division, reportedly concluded that the conduct of the personnel was highly suspicious and detrimental to the discipline and integrity of the police force.
Based on the findings, disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the four under the provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act and the Maharashtra Police Rules. They have been placed under suspension pending further investigation.
Officials said the decision was taken to ensure that the personnel do not influence witnesses or interfere with the probe.
The suspensions come amid growing scrutiny of the alleged network behind the illicit liquor trade following the deaths of 18 people in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Investigators are examining whether the illegal liquor business enjoyed protection from individuals within the system.
Police officials indicated that the inquiry is continuing and that further action could follow if additional evidence emerges during the course of the investigation.
