Yerwada, 5th June 2026: In a poignant case highlighting the vulnerability of unsupervised minors, the Yerwada Police have detained a juvenile in conflict with the law for his involvement in a series of bicycle thefts across the city. The police have recovered 15 stolen bicycles, collectively valued at ₹1,00,000 (one lakh rupees), from his possession.

According to officials, the minor’s confession revealed a deeply troubled domestic life: his mother is deceased, and both his father and paternal grandfather are currently serving time in prison for a serious criminal offense, leaving him with no parental guidance or financial support.

The Investigation and Tip-off

The crackdown follows a sudden surge in bicycle thefts reported in the Maharashtra Housing Board and Nagpur Chawl areas, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Yerwada Police Station. In response, senior police officers ordered immediate and swift action to curb the thefts.

While analyzing CCTV footage of the crime scenes, investigators observed a young boy executing the thefts. Acting on these leads, senior police officials mobilized local detection units.

Constables Balaji Soge and Somnath Gaikwad of the Yerwada detection branch received a crucial tip-off from confidential informants. The tip-off revealed that the minor suspect involved in the thefts was residing with his grandmother in the Navi Khadki area of Yerwada.

Modus Operandi Confessed

Following the lead, the police contacted the minor’s grandmother. In her presence, officers took the boy into confidence and questioned him.

The minor confessed to the thefts, explaining that he would scout target residential areas during the daytime to identify unsecured bicycles. He would then return late at night when the streets were empty to steal them. When asked about his motive, the minor explained that since both his father and grandfather were incarcerated and his mother was dead, there was nobody to look after him or provide pocket money. He resorted to stealing and selling the bicycles to fund his basic daily needs and minor leisure activities.

Commenting on the psychological and social aspects of the case, Senior Police Inspector Anjum Bagwan of Yerwada Police Station stated:

“This is a highly sensitive and tragic case. The minor has absolutely no parental support or oversight at home; his mother passed away some time ago, and both his father and grandfather are currently behind bars for a grave offense. Left entirely to fend for himself with only his elderly grandmother, he took to stealing bicycles to acquire money for his personal expenses and entertainment. Our detection team handled the child with care, took him into confidence in front of his guardian, and recovered 15 stolen bicycles worth ₹1,00,000. He is being dealt with strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.”
