Pune, 8th June 2026 : The Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) will equip all its buses with CCTV cameras and dashboard cameras (dashcams) to improve passenger safety, address commuter complaints and determine responsibility in road accidents, PMPML Managing Director Mahesh Awhad said on Sunday.

Awhad was speaking at a monthly discussion programme organised by Sajag Nagrik Manch. PMPML Joint Managing Director Alice Pore, forum president Vivek Velankar, Jugal Rathi and Sanjay Shitole were among those present.

Awhad said PMPML buses are involved in around 10 fatal accidents every year. “In many cases, police register offences against the driver of the larger vehicle involved in the accident. However, the bus driver is not always at fault. Dashcams will help establish the exact sequence of events and identify the cause of accidents,” he said.

He added that CCTV cameras would also help monitor traffic violations and indiscipline, including buses crossing signals and stopping on zebra crossings.

The PMPML chief said the transport body is undertaking plans to increase the number of buses on routes that record more than 2,000 passengers daily. “We are working towards deploying buses based on passenger demand,” he said.

Awhad also said PMPML intends to improve connectivity for commuters arriving at railway stations, airports, MSRTC bus terminals and Metro stations by increasing both the number of buses and service frequency. Efforts are also underway to introduce an integrated ticketing system on the lines of the “One Nation One Card” initiative, enabling passengers to use a single card for both Metro and PMPML services.

Awhad said PMPML operates around 9,000 bus stops across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, but only about 1,500 currently have shelters. The remaining 7,500 stops consist of little more than a signboard and pole.

To address this, PMPML plans to redevelop these stops through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. Private firms will be allowed advertising rights for 15 years in return for constructing and maintaining modern bus shelters.

The proposed bus stops will be solar-powered and equipped with two CCTV cameras, public announcement systems and digital display boards providing real-time bus information. PMPML is also considering providing dustbins and, wherever feasible, drinking water facilities at the upgraded bus stops.

The redevelopment project is aimed at improving commuter convenience and modernising public transport infrastructure across the Pune metropolitan region.
