Pune May Soon Get a Dedicated Health Committee; PMC Asked to Fast-Track Proposal

Pune, 18th June 2026: The demand for establishing a dedicated Health Committee within the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has gained momentum amid growing concerns over the city’s expanding healthcare needs and the need for a more robust, efficient and accountable public health system.
The proposal was first introduced on June 8, 2026, by corporator and Standing Committee member Suhas Tingre, who tabled a resolution seeking the formation of an independent Health Committee within the civic body.
During the PMC’s General Body meeting held on Wednesday, Tingre raised the issue again, emphasising the urgent need for a separate committee to focus exclusively on public health matters.
Taking note of the proposal, Mayor Manjusha Nagpure directed the civic administration to initiate the necessary steps for the early establishment of the committee.
The demand comes against the backdrop of Pune’s rapidly growing population, accelerating urbanisation, and the rising incidence of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
The city’s public healthcare infrastructure, including municipal hospitals, dispensaries, maternity homes, vaccination drives, sanitation initiatives and other health-related services, requires dedicated oversight and strategic planning, Tingre said.
At present, while PMC has several subject-specific committees, there is no separate platform exclusively tasked with studying, planning, monitoring and making policy decisions related to public health.
“Public health issues require focused attention and a coordinated approach. A dedicated Health Committee will ensure better planning, effective implementation and greater accountability in healthcare services,” Tingre said.
He added that the committee would help make PMC’s health-related functions more transparent, responsive and citizen-centric, ultimately improving access to quality healthcare services for Pune residents.
“Healthy citizens are the true strength of a city’s development. A separate Health Committee is the need of the hour to effectively address future healthcare challenges and provide Pune residents with more efficient and high-quality healthcare services,” Tingre said.
If approved, the proposed committee is expected to strengthen the civic body’s public health response and improve the delivery of healthcare services across Pune.
