Reported by Mubarak Ansari
Pune, 22nd June 2026: High drama unfolded at a National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2026 examination center in Pune on Sunday, June 21, after a female candidate, caught with a mobile phone inside the classroom, attempted to jump from a staircase railing. Following swift intervention, counseling by police and observers, and subsequent permission from the exam coordinator, she was allowed to finish her paper under strict police surveillance and was later safely reunited with her parents.
The incident occurred at the Annasaheb Magar College center in Hadapsar, Pune.
Initial Suspicions During Security Frisking
According to an official from the Special Branch of the Pune City Police, the candidate, who was assigned to Block No. 10, first drew suspicion during the pre-examination security check. A female police officer operating a Hand-Held Metal Detector (HHMD) noticed the device beeping twice near the candidate’s thigh.
When questioned, the candidate claimed she had undergone surgery and had a medical screw in her thigh. Acting on instructions from the Senior Police Inspector (Sr. PI), the female officer took her to a private room for a thorough re-examination. During this search, which included her undergarments, the candidate reportedly grew distressed and told the officers, “Do not ruin my mindset before the exam; your touch is making me uncomfortable.” Since no objectionable objects were recovered during this initial check, the Sr. PI permitted her to enter the examination hall.
Mobile Found Inside the Classroom
However, the situation escalated during the exam. Dr. Nitin Ghorpade, an official at the exam center, submitted a written report to the City Coordinator stating that a mobile phone was discovered on the candidate’s bench. The block supervisor immediately confiscated the device and handed the student over to the female police officers on duty.
High-Drama Suicide Attempt
Fearing the consequences of being caught, the panicked candidate ran toward the staircase, climbed onto the corridor railing, and attempted to jump. The dramatic incident unfolded in front of the on-duty female police personnel, the Police Inspector, and the exam Observer.
The officials acted immediately, rushing to the spot and counseling the highly distressed girl. After a tense few moments, they successfully persuaded her to step down and took her into safe custody.
Allowed to Write the Exam Under Guard
The student was escorted to the administrative office. Following an urgent consultation with the City Coordinator and explaining the sensitive nature of the situation, official permission was granted to let her sit for the examination to protect her academic future and mental well-being.
Her parents were immediately summoned to the center. To ensure security and prevent further incidents, a female police officer was stationed directly outside her classroom for the remainder of the test. Once the exam concluded, the police officers safely handed the candidate over to her parents.
Overall NEET Smooth in Pune
The Pune City Police confirmed that except for this localized incident, the NEET 2026 exams were conducted peacefully across Pune. The city was divided into seven security zones with 26 exam centers and five designated strong rooms.
While exams at 25 centers concluded smoothly at 5:15 PM, the exam for specially-abled students at PM Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 in Lohgaon concluded at 6:20 PM. All exam booklets and materials were successfully sealed and transported to the strong rooms under armed escort.
