Pimpri Chinchwad, 23rd June 2026: In a challenging rescue operation that lasted nearly five hours, firefighters from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) safely rescued a dog that had fallen into a deep, unused well in Chikhali’s More Vasti area on Tuesday.

The PCMC Fire Control Room received an alert at around 9.15 am about a dog trapped inside a well in the locality. A rescue team from the Talawade Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the spot.

Upon arrival, firefighters found that the well was deep and contained a substantial amount of water and debris. Dense thorny vegetation around the well further hampered rescue efforts. Considering the complexity of the operation, additional manpower and rescue equipment were requisitioned from the main fire station.

Using an extension ladder, rescue ropes and safety harnesses, firefighters carefully descended into the well. The operation was fraught with risks as the well’s parapet was old and structurally weak. The well had also remained unused for a long period.

A large crowd gathered at the site to watch the rescue, creating additional challenges. Stones, branches and pieces of glass occasionally fell into the well due to the crowding near its edge, increasing the danger for the rescue personnel.

Officials said the dog was frightened, exhausted and agitated after being trapped for several hours. Its constant movement and attempts to evade rescuers complicated efforts to secure it safely.

During the operation, newly recruited firefighters made repeated attempts to rescue the animal. However, given the difficult conditions and to guide the team through the technically demanding rescue, Fire Officer Rishikant Chippade personally descended into the well and took charge of the operation.

Chipade carefully assessed the dog’s behaviour and mental state before gradually gaining its trust. With support from fellow firefighters and local residents, the rescue operation continued despite the difficult conditions.

The dog repeatedly moved in circles and dodged rescuers while in the middle section of the well, causing delays. However, the team persisted patiently and eventually managed to secure and lift the animal to safety.

The rescue operation lasted between four and five hours and concluded successfully without any injuries. Residents applauded the firefighters’ efforts and congratulated them for their perseverance and courage.

The operation underscored the fire department’s commitment to protecting not only human lives but also animals in distress, officials said.
