Pune, 23rd June 2026: In a major data security scare, a hard disk containing sensitive property records is reported to have gone missing from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) server room, putting the data of nearly 15 lakh properties at risk.

With around 75% of Pune residents paying property tax online, officials and citizens have expressed concern that personal and property-related information may have been compromised.

According to the administration, the USB hard disk stored in the Tax Assessment and Collection Department’s server room was found missing during a routine check. Preliminary investigation, including CCTV footage and technical analysis, reportedly suggests that a contractual employee from the IT department may have taken the device. A case has been registered against the employee at Shivajinagar Police Station, and a detailed investigation is underway.

PMC maintains records of approximately 15 lakh properties in the city, which include owners’ names, addresses, tax assessment details, mobile numbers, and potentially data linked to online transactions. Officials say the incident has raised serious concerns over data security and the confidentiality of citizen information.

In a separate development within the same department, authorities have also uncovered an attempted fraud involving fake demand drafts amounting to around ₹2.57 crore. An independent inquiry has been initiated into this case as well.

The civic administration has stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible in both incidents.
