Mohammadwadi, 27th June 2026: In a major relief for residents of Ganga Kingston Society in NIBM Annexe, Mohammadwadi, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated work on a long-pending drainage pipeline project following repeated representations by residents and social activist Jaymala Dhankikar.

The decision came after Dhankikar met PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on Thursday and highlighted the issue of untreated sewage flowing onto roads due to the absence of a proper drainage pipeline behind the society. The problem had also led to sewage contaminating the society’s utility water supply, causing hardship to residents for nearly two years.

According to Dhankikar, the issue was first brought to the PMC’s attention through a letter submitted on September 19, 2025. Although a tender worth approximately ₹70 lakh had been prepared, the project remained pending until now.

Taking prompt cognisance of the matter, Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram directed the Drainage Department to commence the work on priority. The drainage pipeline installation, along with the associated cement-concrete work, is expected to begin on Tuesday.

PMC Junior Engineer Bapu Raghunath Baravkar, who is overseeing the project, assured residents that the work would be completed without unnecessary delay.

“We have taken charge of the project and will ensure that the drainage work is completed at the earliest. The department is committed to resolving the issue and providing lasting relief to residents,” Baravkar said.

Welcoming the administration’s response, Jaymala Dhankikar thanked the PMC Commissioner for acting swiftly.

“I have been pursuing this issue since 2025 through multiple complaints and follow-ups. I appreciate Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram for responding promptly and ensuring that this long-pending project finally begins. This work will bring much-needed relief to hundreds of families in the area,” she said.

Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the civic administration remains committed to resolving issues that directly impact public health.

“The administration has taken serious note of the complaints received from residents and their representatives. Necessary instructions have been issued to the Drainage Department to begin the work on priority. We remain committed to strengthening civic infrastructure and addressing public grievances in a timely manner,” Ram said.

Residents expressed hope that the commencement of the drainage project would permanently resolve the sewage overflow problem and significantly improve sanitation and living conditions in the locality.
