According to the police, Khandagale and his wife were travelling from Junnar to Pune when the accident occurred at around 7 pm. Heavy rain had caused waterlogging on the highway, resulting in the driver losing control of the vehicle. The car first crashed into the road divider before crossing onto the opposite carriageway, where it collided head-on with two vehicles travelling towards Narayangaon.

Khandagale sustained critical injuries and died in the crash, while the other occupants of the vehicles suffered varying degrees of injuries.
Assistant Police Inspector Pravin Sampange said Khandagale worked as an IT engineer in Pune and had returned to his native village two days earlier. He was travelling back to Pune with his wife when the accident occurred.
