Pune, 1st July 2026: A car travelling through Tunnel No. 2 on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway’s recently opened Missing Link corridor narrowly escaped a major accident on Monday evening after rocks fell from the tunnel roof, shattering its windshield.

According to the Khandala Highway Police, the incident occurred around 5.17 pm when the Pune-bound car (MH 46 CM 1989) was passing through the tunnel. A large rock struck the front windshield, smashing the glass. Despite the impact, the driver managed to keep control of the vehicle, ensuring all occupants escaped unhurt.

Police Sub-Inspector Sameer Katpale of the Khandala Highway Police and Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) personnel Suresh Dhere rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and carried out an inspection.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety and construction quality of the Missing Link project, which was opened to traffic recently to cut travel time on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Motorists questioned whether regular inspections of tunnels, rock slopes and protective mesh were being carried out, especially after rockfall during the first spell of monsoon.

The Missing Link project, inaugurated on May 1, is expected to reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune by 25-30 minutes under normal traffic conditions and includes one of the world’s widest road tunnels and a cable-stayed bridge across Tiger Valley.
