Agra, 5th July 2026: A 45-day-old missing person case in Agra took a shocking turn after police alleged that a woman murdered her husband, buried his body beneath the bathroom floor of their home, and continued living in the house while misleading investigators and family members.

The accused, identified as Ruby, was taken into custody after allegedly confessing to killing her husband, 44-year-old Surendra Kumar Sharma, a native of Bharatpur in Rajasthan who had been living with his family in Renuka Dham Colony in Agra’s Sikandra area.

According to police, Surendra was reported missing on May 26 after his elder brother, Anil Sharma, failed to establish contact with him for several days. During the investigation, Ruby reportedly participated in the search efforts, viewed CCTV footage with police, and allegedly pretended to grieve in an attempt to divert suspicion.

Police said the breakthrough came after Anil Sharma became suspicious of Ruby’s behaviour. He reportedly assured her of his support if she was facing any difficulty, following which she allegedly confessed to the crime.

Based on her statement, police excavated the bathroom floor of the house, where they recovered skeletal remains believed to be those of Surendra. Since the body had decomposed significantly, forensic experts have been tasked with confirming the identity and determining the exact cause of death.

According to the police, Ruby told investigators that her husband frequently consumed alcohol and allegedly subjected her to physical abuse. She claimed that on the night of May 17, she mixed more than 18 sleeping pills into kheer (a traditional Indian dessert) and served it to him. She alleged that he was found dead the following morning.

Police said the accused then called her brother-in-law from Rajasthan but instructed him not to enter the house. She allegedly moved her two daughters and mother-in-law to a nearby location before sending them to Rajasthan with him. Investigators said she then dragged the body to the bathroom, dug a pit, buried it, and later returned to Agra after several days to have labourers lay a new floor over the burial site.

To conceal the crime, Ruby allegedly told family members that Surendra had left the house after an argument, taking ₹5,000 with him, and would contact them in a few days.

Following her alleged confession, police brought labourers to the house to remove the bathroom flooring. After excavating the site, officers recovered only skeletal remains due to advanced decomposition.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Ameesha Singh said Surendra Sharma had been reported missing on May 26. During the investigation, evidence pointed towards the involvement of his wife, who is now in police custody and being questioned.

Police said further investigation is underway, and forensic examination of the skeletal remains will play a key role in establishing the circumstances surrounding the death. At this stage, the allegations against the accused remain part of the ongoing investigation, and the case is yet to be adjudicated in court.
