Pune: State Approves Re 1 Lease For 28 Hectares To Set Up IIM Nagpur Campus in Moshi
Pimpri Chinchwad, 4th July 2026: The proposed extension campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur in Moshi has moved a step closer to reality after the Maharashtra government approved the allotment of 28 hectares of government land on a nominal lease for the project.
In a Government Resolution (GR) issued on July 3, the Revenue and Forest Department sanctioned the allotment of 28 hectares of land from Survey No. 327 in Moshi for setting up an academic and training campus of IIM Nagpur.
According to the GR, the land will be leased to the institute for an initial period of 49 years at a nominal annual rent of Re 1, with a provision to renew the lease for another 49 years.
The decision comes after the state cabinet, at its meeting on June 21, reversed an earlier proposal to charge the institute the market value of the land. The revised policy allows the land to be allotted on a nominal lease, citing the larger public interest in promoting higher education.
The government has stipulated that the land can be used only for educational and training purposes. The institute will not be allowed to sell, transfer, mortgage or commercially exploit the land without prior approval from the state government.
The GR also states that the institute should consider extending preference or concessions to students from Maharashtra, entrepreneurs and government officials in its academic and training programmes.
The proposed campus is expected to strengthen management education and research in the Pimpri Chinchwad region while creating a new higher education hub in the city’s industrial belt. The project is also expected to benefit local students and industries by providing access to world-class management education and executive training.
Reacting to the development, Bhosari MLA Mahesh Landge said the project aligns with the vision of transforming Pimpri Chinchwad into a centre for education, research and innovation.
“Our aim is to ensure that Pimpri Chinchwad is known not only as an industrial city but also as a global hub for education and innovation. The proposed IIM campus in Moshi is a major step in that direction. The state government’s decision will enable thousands of students to access world-class management education within the city while strengthening the link between industry and academia,” he said.
