Pune: Khadakwasla Dam Reaches 76% Capacity; Water Release Likely in Coming Hours, Citizens Asked to Stay Away from Riverbed
Khadakwasla, 7th July 2026: The Khadakwasla Dam has reached 76% of its storage capacity following intense rainfall in its catchment area, prompting the Irrigation Department to issue a public advisory warning that water may be released from the dam’s spillway in the coming hours.
According to the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the reservoir was 76% full as of 10:00 AM on Tuesday. With heavy rainfall continuing in the catchment and a significant inflow into the reservoir, officials said the dam is likely to reach 80% capacity or more within the next few hours. Depending on the rainfall situation, water discharge from the spillway may commence at any time.
The department has urged residents to stay away from the riverbed and avoid entering the river under any circumstances. Citizens have also been asked to immediately remove any materials, equipment, or livestock from the riverbed to prevent losses in the event of a sudden release of water.
People living in low-lying areas along the river have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by the authorities. Local agencies have also been asked to inform residents in vulnerable areas and take necessary precautionary measures.
Executive Engineer Kiran Deshmukh of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division said, “Heavy rainfall is continuing in the Khadakwasla Dam catchment area, and the reservoir has reached 76% of its storage capacity as of 10:00 AM. Considering the ongoing rainfall and inflow, the reservoir is likely to reach 80% or more within the next few hours. Depending on the rainfall situation, there is a strong possibility that water will be released from the dam’s spillway at any time. Citizens are requested not to enter the riverbed and to immediately shift any materials or livestock from the riverbed to safer locations. Residents in low-lying areas should remain vigilant, take necessary precautions, and cooperate with the Irrigation Department.”
