Veteran Chess Administrator Prakash Kunte Passes Away

Pune, 7th July 2026: Veteran chess administrator and one of the pioneers of Maharashtra’s chess movement, Mr. Prakash Kunte, passed away today at the age of 80. His demise has cast a pall of gloom over the chess fraternity in Pune and across Maharashtra. The sporting community has lost a dedicated, visionary, and selfless administrator who devoted his life to the growth and promotion of chess.

Mr. Kunte served as a Trustee of the Chess Sports Trust and as Vice President of the Pune District Chess Circle. Over several decades, he played a pivotal role in promoting and developing chess in Pune and Maharashtra, while nurturing numerous talented players. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to sports administration, he was honoured with the “Outstanding Sports Administrator Award” by Symbiosis.

He made a significant contribution to shaping the careers of Indian Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte and Woman International Master Mrunalini Kunte, providing them with invaluable guidance and support during their formative years. He also mentored and encouraged several promising young chess players across the state, leaving a lasting impact on Maharashtra’s chess ecosystem.

He is survived by his wife, one son, and two daughters.

His last rites were performed today at Vaikunth Crematorium in Pune. A large number of eminent sportspersons, chess players, coaches, sports administrators, and dignitaries from various fields gathered to pay their heartfelt tributes and bid a final farewell to the departed soul.
