Karjat–Lonavala Landslide: Central Railway Refunds Rs 5.91 Crore to Nearly 80,000 Passengers in a Day
Pune, 07th July 2026: Central Railway refunded ₹5.91 crore to 79,747 passengers on July 6 after widespread train cancellations and service disruptions caused by the landslide between Karjat and Lonavala in the South East Ghat section.
According to Central Railway, the landslide led to the cancellation, short-termination, short-origination and rescheduling of several trains, leaving thousands of passengers unable to travel. Refunds were processed across all divisions to passengers affected by the disruption.
The railway administration said the total refund amount on July 6, 2026, stood at ₹5.91 crore, nearly double the ₹3.01 crore refunded to 38,687 passengers on the corresponding day last year, July 6, 2025.
The latest figures show an increase of ₹2.89 crore in refunds and 41,060 additional passengers receiving refunds compared to last year, representing a 96 per cent rise in the refund amount and a 106 per cent increase in the number of passengers refunded.
Mumbai Division Refunded ₹2.86 Crore
The Mumbai Division refunded ₹2.86 crore to 37,330 passengers on July 6, 2026. On the corresponding day in 2025, the division had refunded ₹1.42 crore to 17,490 passengers.
This marks an increase of ₹1.44 crore in refund value and 19,840 additional passengers, translating into a 101 per cent increase in the refund amount and a 113 per cent rise in the number of passengers refunded.
Pune Division Refunded ₹1.56 Crore
The Pune Division processed refunds worth ₹1.56 crore for 20,982 passengers on July 6, 2026.
On the corresponding day last year, the division refunded ₹74.46 lakh to 9,689 passengers. The latest figures indicate an increase of ₹81.82 lakh and 11,293 additional passengers, reflecting a 109 per cent increase in the refund amount and a 116 per cent increase in the number of passengers refunded.
Central Railway said additional staff were deployed at stations and special help desks were established to facilitate refund processing and assist passengers during the disruption. Restoration work in the affected Karjat–Lonavala ghat section is continuing, while passengers have been advised to check the latest train status before commencing their journey.
