Pune: Namaz Disrupted at Mosque Due to Sewage Waterlogging; Residents Seek Immediate PMC Action
Hadapsar, 9th July 2026: Worshippers at a mosque in Sayyad Nagar under Pune Municipal Corporation’s Ward No. 41 have been unable to offer daily namaz after the mosque’s porch remained submerged in rainwater mixed with sewage for the past five days.
According to residents, continuous rainfall over the last few days caused sewage to backflow through blocked drainage lines, resulting in waterlogging inside the mosque premises. The accumulated sewage-mixed water has made access to the mosque difficult and raised concerns over public health.
Residents alleged that despite repeatedly approaching the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), no effective action has been taken to clear the water. They said the prolonged waterlogging has not only disrupted daily prayers but also created unhygienic conditions in the locality.
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Nivrutti Anna Bandal, who has been following up on the issue with the PMC’s Drainage Department, visited the mosque on Thursday and assured residents that efforts were underway to resolve the problem.
“Due to the waterlogging at the mosque, local residents are unable to offer their daily namaz. The sewage-mixed water has also become a health hazard for people living nearby. Residents approached me seeking immediate relief,” Bandal said.
He said he had repeatedly requested the PMC’s Drainage Department to deploy a jetting machine to clear the blocked drainage lines and remove the accumulated water.
“I have been continuously demanding that a jetting machine be sent to clear the drainage system. The PMC’s Drainage Department should not test the patience of residents and must resolve this issue without further delay,” he added.
Local residents acknowledged Bandal’s efforts while urging the civic administration to act swiftly.
Arbaz Khan, a resident, said Bandal had been standing with the community since the issue began.
“Anna Bandal has visited the area several times, spoken to officials, and ensured our grievances are heard. We have seen his efforts, but without the required machinery, the problem cannot be resolved. We hope the PMC acts immediately,” Khan said.
Another resident, Shamim Shaikh, said Bandal had remained on the ground with residents over the past four days instead of merely making promises.
“We appreciate his commitment. The administration must now provide the necessary jetting machine and manpower so that the mosque premises and surrounding lanes are cleared before Friday prayers,” Shaikh said.
Sultana Ansari, another resident, said stagnant sewage water had affected children, senior citizens, and women in the locality.
“We are grateful that Bandal Anna has continued to pursue the matter with the authorities. We now request the civic administration to respond with the same urgency and resolve the issue at the earliest,” she said.
Residents have urged the Pune Municipal Corporation to immediately deploy the required equipment and workforce to clear the sewage water and restore access to the mosque ahead of Friday prayers.
