Pune PMC’s Water Testing Laboratory Gets National Quality Recognition
Pune, 25th August 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Parvati Water Treatment Centre laboratory has received recognition under the NABL 139 programme for meeting national quality standards for drinking water testing, marking a significant milestone for the civic body’s water supply department.
The recognition has been granted through the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL), under the Quality Council of India (QCI), for the laboratory’s testing capabilities.
The laboratory has met the required national standards for testing 11 key parameters of drinking water, including pH, turbidity, hardness, alkalinity and chloride. The recognition is expected to strengthen the reliability and consistency of water quality testing carried out by the PMC.
According to the PMC, the Parvati laboratory has been conducting drinking water testing for several decades and has continuously upgraded its systems and processes to monitor the quality of water supplied to Pune residents.
The civic body said the laboratory is the first drinking water testing laboratory under the water supply department of an urban local body (ULB) in Maharashtra to receive this level of recognition. It noted that most other accredited laboratories in the state operate under state government or municipal health departments.
The laboratory is now working towards obtaining full NABL accreditation under ISO/IEC 17025 for the same 11 testing parameters. The accreditation would further strengthen its capacity for certified water quality testing and monitoring.
The initiative was undertaken under the guidance of PMC Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram and Additional Municipal Commissioner Pavneet Kaur, with Water Supply Department head Nandkishor Jagtap overseeing the process. Chemist Mandar Sardeshpande and his colleagues worked on the accreditation process.
The PMC said the achievement reflects its focus on public health, technical improvements and ensuring safe and quality drinking water for residents of Pune.
