Pune/Raigad, 12th July 2026: Two tourists from Pune are feared to have drowned at the Devkund Waterfall in Raigad district on Sunday after reportedly entering the restricted tourist spot despite a ban, according to preliminary information.

The incident occurred at the popular waterfall near Bhira village in Mangaon taluka, the origin of the Kundalika River. Devkund has been closed to tourists due to safety concerns during the monsoon, but visitors are reportedly continuing to access the site by evading restrictions.

According to initial reports, the two tourists from Pune reached the waterfall after undertaking the approximately 7-km trek through the hilly terrain. They are believed to have entered deep water beneath the waterfall and drowned.

The incident reportedly took place on Sunday afternoon, July 12.

Due to the difficult geographical conditions and fading daylight, search operations could not begin immediately. Rescue efforts are expected to commence on Monday morning, officials said.

Locals said the depth of the pool beneath the waterfall is difficult to gauge, particularly during the monsoon when water levels rise and currents become stronger, making rescue and recovery operations extremely challenging.

Police have reached the spot and have coordinated with rescue teams to begin the search at first light on Monday.

The identities of the two tourists have not yet been officially disclosed, and authorities are awaiting further information.

The incident serves as another reminder of the dangers of visiting restricted waterfalls during the monsoon, when sudden changes in water flow and poor visibility can prove fatal despite warnings and official restrictions.
