According to police, the victims were part of a group of 21 employees, including women, who had travelled to Devkund for a picnic. The group was reportedly intercepted by police at Patnus village and advised not to proceed because access to the waterfall had been prohibited during the monsoon due to safety risks.

Investigators said the group allegedly ignored the warning and reached the waterfall through an alternate route with the assistance of two local guides.

Following the incident, police registered an accidental death report (ADR) and also booked members of the group along with the two guides under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for allegedly violating a lawful order issued by public authorities.
