Wakdewadi, 16th July 2026: In a bid to address chronic traffic congestion around the old Shivajinagar ST Stand at Wakdewadi, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed the construction of a new flyover connecting Sakhar Sankul directly to the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway.

The proposed flyover is expected to provide seamless connectivity from Ganeshkhind Road via Sakhar Sankul to the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway, reducing travel time and easing traffic movement in one of the city’s busiest corridors. The project is also expected to improve access after the relocation of the Shivajinagar ST bus station in the area.

According to the PMC, the survey for the project has been completed, and the estimated cost of the flyover stands at ₹75 crore. Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram has placed a proposal before the Standing Committee seeking approval to undertake the project by accepting financial liability under Section 72(B) and making annual budgetary provisions for its execution. The proposal will be discussed by the Standing Committee before being placed before the General Body for final approval.

Major Relief for Commuters
At present, motorists travelling from Ganeshkhind Road towards Pimpri-Chinchwad have to pass through the Sancheti Hospital and Patil Estate junctions, where heavy traffic congestion is a regular occurrence.

Although the PMC had earlier constructed an underpass connecting Sakhar Sankul to the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway, it is suitable only for two-wheelers and a limited number of light vehicles. To overcome this limitation, the civic body’s Project Department has proposed a new flyover along with a railway grade separator near the railway line.

Detailed Planning Completed
The PMC has completed the detailed project report (DPR), topographical survey, and soil testing through an appointed consultant. The civic body plans to complete construction within 18 months, excluding the monsoon period.

The PMC’s Technical Scrutiny Committee has approved the project estimate of ₹73.51 crore, while the Municipal Commissioner has granted administrative approval for the overall project liability of ₹75 crore.

The proposal to earmark funds for the project has been prepared by the civic administration and submitted to the Standing Committee. Following its approval, the proposal will be placed before the General Body. Construction will commence after all statutory approvals are obtained.

Proposed Cost Breakdown
New flyover and railway grade separator: ₹44.76 crore
Relocation of water supply and sewer pipelines: ₹2.33 crore
Slip roads and associated works: ₹14.79 crore
GST: ₹11.14 crore
Other expenses (quality control, royalty, etc.): ₹50 lakh
The proposed infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve traffic flow around Wakdewadi and Shivajinagar, offering long-term relief to commuters travelling between central Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad while strengthening connectivity to the Old Pune-Mumbai Highway.
