PMC Says 54 Potholes Remain in Pune; Citizens’ Group Points to 25 in 50 Metres

Pune, 27th July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) claim that only 54 potholes remain on roads across the city has come under sharp criticism from the Sajag Nagrik Manch, which has alleged that around 25 potholes can be found on a stretch of just 50 metres in Navi Peth.

Sajag Nagrik Manch president Vivek Velankar has submitted a written complaint to the PMC Commissioner, questioning the civic administration’s assessment of the number of potholes in the city.

According to Velankar, the stretch between Vitthal Mandir and Ganjwe Chowk in Navi Peth alone has around 25 potholes within approximately 50 metres.

In his complaint, Velankar used the sarcastic line, “The monsoon arrives every year, and the roads become a school for potholes,” to highlight what he described as the poor condition of Pune’s roads.

He said citizens are already struggling with potholes and loose gravel spread across roads following allegedly poor-quality repairs. Against this backdrop, the Roads Department’s claim that only 54 potholes remain in the entire city is tantamount to rubbing salt into the wounds of Pune residents, he alleged.

Velankar questioned whether the 25 potholes on the Navi Peth stretch had escaped the Roads Department’s attention or whether they were among the 54 potholes that the civic body claims remain across the entire city.

‘Verify the ground reality’
The Sajag Nagrik Manch criticised the PMC for making what it described as exaggerated and unrealistic claims and questioned how citizens could be expected to accept such figures without verification.

The organisation has urged the PMC Commissioner to personally inspect roads across the city to assess the ground situation.

It has also demanded action against officials responsible for allegedly providing misleading or unrealistic information about the number of potholes remaining on Pune’s roads.
