Pune University Warns Colleges: Strict Action If Vacant Principal, Faculty Posts Aren’t Filled in 8 Days
Pune, 29th July 2026: Various student organisations have urged Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) to take strict action against affiliated colleges that have failed to fill vacant posts of principals, directors and faculty members despite repeated directives from the university.
A delegation representing several student and political organisations submitted a memorandum to SPPU Vice-Chancellor Dr Suresh Gosavi, alleging that several colleges have ignored the university’s instructions to recruit teaching and non-teaching staff, affecting the quality of education.
According to the delegation, the Maharashtra Public Universities Act requires affiliated colleges to maintain the prescribed number of principals, professors, directors and non-teaching staff in accordance with norms set by the university and the state government. However, several colleges have allegedly failed to initiate the recruitment process despite repeated reminders from the university.
The student organisations claimed that the shortage of faculty has deprived students of quality education. They also alleged that several affiliated colleges completed admissions for first-year courses without complying with the university’s recruitment directives.
The delegation further alleged that some colleges have appointed teachers on a temporary basis for meagre honorariums, resulting in their financial exploitation. It demanded immediate and stringent action against such institutions.
Responding to the concerns, Vice-Chancellor Gosavi assured the delegation that the university would take the matter seriously. He said colleges that fail to comply with the university’s directions within the next eight days would face strict action.
The delegation included Advocate Suresh Khurpe and Anil Sheware of Vidyarthi Vikas Manch, Atul Zodge of the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi, Advocate Faiyaz Shaikh of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Legal Cell, Ulhas Agnihotri of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena, Amarjeet Pabme of the Nationalist Students’ Congress and Rohan Kale, among others.
