Pune: 20,779 Cusecs from Khadakwasla, 5,402 Cusecs from Panshet: Mutha River Warning Issued

Pune, 2nd August 2026: The Khadakwasla Irrigation Division has increased water discharge from both Khadakwasla and Panshet dams following a rapid rise in reservoir levels due to continuous heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. Authorities have issued an advisory urging residents to stay away from the Mutha riverbed as water levels are expected to rise.

According to the Executive Engineer of the Khadakwasla Irrigation Division, the discharge from Khadakwasla Dam into the Mutha River will be increased from 13,981 cusecs to 20,779 cusecs from 10 am on Sunday.

“Due to the rapid increase in the water level of Khadakwasla Dam and heavy rainfall in the catchment area, the discharge through the spillway into the Mutha River will be increased to 20,779 cusecs from 10 am today. Depending on the intensity of rainfall and inflow into the reservoir, the discharge may be increased or reduced further,” the Executive Engineer said.

The department has also announced an increase in discharge from Panshet Dam, which has reached 100% storage capacity.

“Panshet Dam is currently full, and the catchment area is receiving continuous rainfall, resulting in heavy inflows into the reservoir. To regulate the reservoir level, a discharge of 600 cusecs is already being released through the hydropower station. In addition, the spillway discharge will be increased from 3,196 cusecs to 5,402 cusecs from 10 am today. The discharge may be revised further depending on rainfall and inflows into the dam,” the Executive Engineer stated.

The irrigation department has appealed to residents living along the Mutha River to exercise caution as the combined releases from the two dams are expected to raise the river’s water level.

“People are requested not to enter the riverbed. Water pumps installed in the river, agricultural equipment kept along the riverbank, and any livestock or similar materials should be shifted immediately to safer locations. Residents in low-lying areas should be alerted, and everyone is requested to take necessary precautions and cooperate with the Water Resources Department and the district administration,” the Executive Engineer added.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and follow official advisories, as water releases from both dams may be increased or reduced depending on rainfall and reservoir inflows.
