Pune: Mayor Manjusha Nagpure Presses for Higher Water Quota, Dam Desilting and River Revival

Pune, 3rd August 2026: Citing the city’s growing future water requirements, Pune mayor Manjusha Nagpure has urged Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil to approve a 25 TMC water quota for Pune and launch a special desilting drive to enhance the storage capacity of the Khadakwasla dam system.

Nagpure met Vikhe Patil in Mumbai and submitted a list of demands related to the city’s water security, infrastructure and river conservation.

During the meeting, the mayor also sought the immediate issuance of a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Water Resources Department for the construction of two proposed bridges in the Dhayari area to help ease traffic congestion.

She further proposed the creation of a state-level Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Mission to oversee desilting of the river, pollution control and the implementation of an integrated flood management plan.

Nagpure also demanded a special desilting campaign for the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon and Temghar dams to restore their original water storage capacity. She urged the state government to constitute a joint high-level committee to oversee the exercise.

“Ensuring a sustainable water supply for Pune, congestion-free roads, safe water sources and a clean Mula-Mutha river is the need of the hour. I met the Water Resources Minister to ensure that key issues related to the city’s development are pursued consistently and resolved at the earliest,” Nagpure said.

According to the mayor, Vikhe Patil responded positively to the demands and directed officials to initiate the necessary action on the issues raised.
