Pune: PCMC Fills 1,609 Potholes Across City, Work on 555 More Underway
Pimpri Chinchwad, 11th August 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has intensified its pothole-filling drive across the city, with civic teams acting on complaints received from citizens, elected representatives and through various media platforms. Of the 2,164 pothole-related complaints received so far, 1,609 potholes have been repaired, while work on the remaining 555 is underway, the civic body said.
The PCMC’s engineering department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of roads across the city. Once a pothole complaint is received, a team from the concerned regional office visits the location to assess the size and depth of the pothole, road condition, traffic movement and prevailing rainfall conditions before selecting the appropriate material for repairs. The pothole is then filled and the work is recorded.
The civic body said the repair process involves receiving the complaint, inspecting the location, assessing the pothole, selecting suitable material, carrying out the repair and subsequently inspecting and recording the work. Of the 1,609 potholes repaired so far, 556 have been filled using cold mix, 23 with bituminous base binding material (BBM), 754 with granular sub-base (GSB), 120 using paving blocks and 156 with concrete.
Dedicated teams have been deployed in every ward for pothole repairs. These teams have been provided with the required materials, equipment, manpower and vehicles and are carrying out inspections of both major and internal roads before undertaking repairs wherever potholes are found.
As the city is currently experiencing the monsoon, the asphalt plant remains shut. The civic body is therefore using cold mix, BBM, GSB, paving blocks and concrete for temporary repairs. However, continuous rainfall and waterlogging at some locations can damage potholes that have been temporarily repaired, prompting the civic teams to undertake repairs again wherever necessary.
The PCMC has also planned permanent repairs once there is a prolonged break in rainfall. Civic officials said road and asphalt surfaces remain wet during the monsoon, making it difficult to achieve the required quality for asphalt work. Temporary repairs are therefore being carried out at present to reduce inconvenience to motorists.
Once the monsoon ends and the asphalt plant resumes operations, roads that underwent temporary repairs during the rainy season will be inspected again and permanently resurfaced wherever required. Roads that are still under the defect liability period will be repaired through the concerned contractors. Contractors who fail to undertake repairs will face action as per the rules, the civic body said.
“Due to the intensity and continuity of rainfall, water is accumulating again at some locations, damaging potholes that were temporarily repaired. Work to fill potholes using the materials currently available is being carried out at a fast pace to minimise inconvenience to citizens. Once there is a prolonged break in rainfall, repair work will be carried out more effectively. After the monsoon, when the asphalt plant resumes operations, permanent asphalt work will be undertaken wherever necessary,” said Pramod Ombhase, chief engineer, PCMC.
PCMC Commissioner Dr Vijay Suryawanshi said strict instructions had been issued to the concerned departments regarding pothole repairs. “The responsibility for resolving complaints within the stipulated time lies with the concerned executive engineers. Department heads have been instructed to regularly monitor the work and propose action as per rules against engineers who neglect complaints,” he said.
