Pune Inner Ring Road Land Acquisition Begins; PMRDA Faces 735-Hectare Challenge
Pune, 18th August 2026: The land acquisition process for the proposed Pune Inner Ring Road has been expedited, but the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) faces a major challenge in acquiring nearly 735 hectares of land required for the project.
The PMRDA has transferred ₹44 crore to the Pune District Collector for land acquisition in the first phase. The authority has also initiated the process of purchasing land directly through negotiations with landowners in selected villages.
The proposed Inner Ring Road is planned to be 83 km long and 65 metres wide. Of this, approximately 39.22 km will pass through 21 villages within the PMRDA jurisdiction.
In the first phase, land acquisition has begun in Solu village in Khed taluka and Vadgaon Shinde and Nirgudi villages in Haveli taluka. Land in these areas is being acquired through direct purchase following negotiations with landowners.
The district-level committee has finalised the compensation rates for the land. Further proceedings will be conducted through the office of the Deputy Collector (Land Acquisition No. 26).
25% Additional Compensation for Consenting Landowners
The PMRDA has stated that landowners who agree to sell their land through negotiations will receive an additional 25% compensation over the prescribed amount.
However, if landowners do not provide their consent within the stipulated period, the authority has retained the option of acquiring the land compulsorily in accordance with the law.
The response of landowners will therefore be crucial in determining the pace of the project. The PMRDA will have to assess how much land can be acquired through mutual negotiations and how much may ultimately require compulsory acquisition.
With a large amount of land required for the entire Inner Ring Road project, completing the acquisition process within the planned timeframe remains one of the biggest challenges for the development authority.
The project is aimed at easing traffic congestion in Pune city and its surrounding areas. However, the progress of the road project will largely depend on how quickly pending land acquisition issues are resolved.
