Pune: Contract Worker Dies After Falling While Removing Independence Day lights From PCMC’s H Regional Office in Kasarwadi
Pimpri Chinchwad, 19th August 2026: A 43-year-old contract worker died on Tuesday afternoon after slipping and falling from the terrace of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) H regional office building in Kasarwadi while removing Independence Day lighting.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Vitthal Sabale, a resident of Vijaynagar in Kalevadi. He was employed with Parvati Electrics, the contractor engaged for the work.
According to police and municipal sources, festive electric lighting had been installed on the building for Independence Day on August 15. On Tuesday, four workers of the contractor were sent to the terrace to dismantle the decorations. While standing on a tin shed and removing the lights with the power supply switched off, Sabale suddenly slipped and fell to the ground between 1.30 pm and 2 pm.
He was rushed to Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital in a critical condition but was declared dead on arrival. Dapodi police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
Workers have alleged that no safety equipment such as helmets or boots was provided for the task. Municipal officials acknowledged that the contractor had started the work without prior intimation to the electricity department. Mahesh Kawale of PCMC’s electricity department said a decision on action against the contractor would be taken after due examination.
The incident has once again raised questions over the enforcement of safety norms for contract labourers engaged in municipal works.
