Pune: Ruling BJP at PMC Warns Civic Administration of Agitation if Potholes Not Repaired in 8 Days
Pune, 21st August 2026: With repeated directives to repair pothole-ridden roads failing to yield visible results, members of the ruling BJP on Thursday took the Pune civic administration to task and warned of an agitation if road conditions do not improve within eight days.
The issue was raised during the standing committee meeting, where members expressed frustration over the poor condition of roads across the city and alleged that the administration had failed to act despite repeated instructions.
Standing committee chairman Shrinath Bhimale warned that civic representatives would take to the streets if the situation did not improve within a week.
Several major roads as well as roads in the suburbs have been severely damaged by the monsoon, with large potholes making commuting difficult and increasing the risk of accidents. Residents have also questioned whether the city has “roads with potholes or potholes with roads”.
The administration had earlier assured the standing committee and general body that potholes would be repaired within eight to 10 days. However, members said similar assurances had been given at successive meetings without any significant improvement on the ground.
Corporators also alleged that civic officials were not taking their directions seriously and said they were increasingly facing public anger over the poor condition of roads.
“If the administration does not listen, we will have to take to the streets to make the citizens’ voice heard. The commissioner should personally intervene and ensure that potholes are repaired, otherwise we will be forced to launch an agitation,” Bhimale said.
Bhimale also said the civic body needed a planned approach to address the growing traffic pressure and infrastructure requirements in areas recently incorporated into the Pune Municipal Corporation limits from PMRDA.
The committee also discussed the death of an 11-year-old boy in a pothole-related accident at Mahalunge. Bhimale said the civic administration was examining whether provisions existed to provide financial assistance to victims of such accidents.
“If compensation is applicable under the Supreme Court’s directions, it will be implemented,” he said.
