Pune Professional Explains Why Small Salary Hikes May Not Be Worth Switching Jobs

Pune, 9th September 2026: A Pune-based professional has sparked a discussion online about whether employees earning ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh per month should continue switching jobs for relatively small salary hikes.

In a video shared on Instagram, Nihar Patil argued that once professionals reach this income range, career decisions should not be based only on salary increases. He said factors such as job stability, a supportive manager, meaningful projects, workplace reputation and overall career satisfaction should also be considered.

Patil said professionals earning around ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2 lakh a month should carefully evaluate whether a ₹20,000–₹30,000 salary increase is enough to justify moving to another company.

According to him, after taxes, the actual increase in take-home pay may be considerably smaller than the headline salary hike. He also pointed out that switching jobs could mean leaving behind professional goodwill built within an organisation, including trusted colleagues, good projects, a supportive manager and an established reputation.

He also highlighted the potential risk associated with moving into a higher-cost role. Patil said employees should consider the possibility of restructuring or layoffs, particularly when their higher compensation could make them more expensive for an organisation.

“Why switch just for a small jump?” he asked, arguing that employees who are already doing well in a stable workplace should consider what they may be giving up before making a move.

Patil’s argument, however, was not that professionals should stop switching jobs altogether. Instead, he suggested that employees should evaluate whether a new opportunity offers meaningful growth alongside a higher salary.

He also encouraged professionals with stable jobs to use their time to develop skills, work on personal projects or create additional sources of income.

His broader argument was that career growth does not necessarily have to mean continuously chasing the next salary hike. Instead, financial independence could also involve building skills, pursuing interests and developing income streams outside a primary job.
