Using AI Apps for 1980s-Style Photos? Experts Warn of Privacy and Misuse Risks
Pune, 12th September 2026: A new trend of giving photographs an 1980s-style look is gaining popularity on social media, with users turning to various artificial intelligence (AI)-powered mobile apps to transform their pictures. However, experts have warned users against uploading personal photographs to unfamiliar apps merely to create attractive images.
Information technology expert Dr Deepak Shikarpur said users should verify the credibility of any mobile app before using it and understand what information it seeks and how the data may be used.
“Before using any mobile app, check its credibility. Understand what information it asks for and why it needs that information. Do not grant unnecessary permissions. Avoid sharing identity documents, bank account details, passwords or private photographs with unfamiliar apps,” he said.
Experts have warned that photographs uploaded to unreliable platforms could potentially be misused to create fake identities or manipulated images. Such images could also be used for financial fraud, defamation or causing mental distress.
With AI-based photo-editing apps becoming increasingly popular, users have been advised to check an app’s privacy policy, permissions and credibility before uploading personal photographs.
