Pune, 14th September 2026: Chandannagar police have registered a case against five people, including a woman’s husband, for allegedly subjecting her to physical and mental harassment over a dowry demand of Rs 15 lakh and forcing her to undergo an occult ritual to remove her husband’s alleged “Manglik dosh”.
According to the complaint filed by the 29-year-old woman, the accused allegedly took her to a self-styled godman, who claimed that her husband had “Manglik dosh”. She was allegedly forced to consume water mixed with an ash-like substance after it was placed in the water at the godman’s direction.
The woman was also allegedly asked to perform a ritual by applying turmeric and vermilion to her private parts. When she refused, the accused allegedly abused and assaulted her.
The accused have been identified as Pradeep Manohar Patil, 32; Malan Manohar Patil, 52; Pratiksha Manohar Patil, 29, all residents of Saroli in Gadhinglaj taluka of Kolhapur district; and Pritam Manish Patil, 30, and Manish Patil, both residents of Nanded City, Pune.
The alleged harassment took place between April 11 and August 9, 2026. The woman alleged that her in-laws and others had demanded Rs 15 lakh in connection with the marriage. She paid Rs 2.20 lakh through online transactions, but was allegedly subjected to mental and physical harassment after failing to pay the remaining amount.
The complaint states that the woman had told the accused that she would not fall victim to such superstitious practices, but was allegedly forced to perform the ritual anyway.
Chandannagar police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Maharashtra Prohibition of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Evil and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act.
Police are also investigating whether other people may have been similarly cheated or harassed by the accused. Assistant Police Inspector Varsha Bambe is conducting the investigation.
