Pune: PCMC RTO Cracks Down On Fancy Number Plates, Black Films; 395 Vehicles Booked in Two Weeks
Pune, 17th September 2026: The Pimpri Chinchwad Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special enforcement drive against vehicles displaying fancy or improperly formatted number plates, using black films on windows, failing to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) and violating rules governing out-of-state luxury and travel buses.
Between September 1 and 15, the RTO took action against 395 vehicles and collected Rs 8.09 lakh in fines in 167 cases, officials said.
The drive was conducted ahead of Ganeshotsav and aimed at curbing unauthorised modifications and other violations. During the checks, officials inspected number plates, window films, HSRP compliance and documents of luxury and travel buses.
The highest number of violations — 275 — were related to vehicles without HSRP number plates. Of these, fines were paid in 106 cases, with Rs 1.08 lakh collected.
The RTO also acted against 59 vehicles for displaying fancy number plates, incorrectly displaying registration numbers or using registration marks in an unauthorised manner. Fines were paid in 32 cases, generating Rs 20,500 in revenue.
Sixteen vehicles were penalised for using unauthorised black films on their windows. Six of these cases resulted in fines totalling Rs 3,000.
The enforcement drive also covered luxury and travel buses registered in other states. Action was taken against 45 buses, with Rs 6.77 lakh collected in fines. Officials said enforcement against out-of-state passenger buses would continue.
Sub-regional transport officer Ashwini Swami urged motorists to avoid unauthorised or fancy number plates and install HSRP plates as prescribed by the government. She also advised vehicle owners against covering windows with black films or making unauthorised alterations to number plates.
The drive was carried out under the guidance of Pimpri-Chinchwad regional transport officer Sandesh Chavan and deputy regional transport officer Rahul Jadhav.
