Pune: Road Accidents in Pimpri Chinchwad Up BY 6%, Fatalities Down 8%

Pimpri Chinchwad, 19th September 2026: While Pimpri Chinchwad police have managed to bring down fatal accidents and deaths on the city’s roads, the overall number of accidents has risen by 6% this year, raising concerns over road safety and infrastructure.

Between January and August, the city recorded 908 accidents, up from 855 during the corresponding period last year — an increase of 53 cases. Fatal accidents fell by 4%, from 247 to 238, while deaths declined by 8%, from 268 to 247.

The figures, however, have raised questions over the rising number of accidents and the risks faced by those who suffer serious injuries. Pending road-widening projects, ongoing road works and traffic congestion continue to pose accident risks at several locations.

In 2024, the city recorded 1,203 accidents, including 360 fatal accidents that claimed 374 lives. In 2025, the number rose to 1,286 accidents, with 373 fatal crashes killing 399 people.

Traffic police have continued enforcement against motorists to curb accidents. Between January and August, action was taken against 72,160 motorists for driving on the wrong side, 2,342 for dangerous driving, 15,648 for using mobile phones while driving, 1,52,243 for illegal parking and 51,415 for riding without helmets.

Together, these five violations accounted for 2,93,808 cases. Police also booked 3,375 motorists for drunk driving and took action in 70,742 cases involving heavy vehicles entering the city during restricted hours.

Deputy commissioner of police (Traffic) Vikrant Deshmukh said the rising number of accidents was a concern and appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules and drive safely. He said police were pursuing road repairs, widening and other safety measures with the concerned agencies.

While traffic police have intensified enforcement through nakabandi, drunk-driving checks and action against wrong-side driving, helmet violations, mobile phone use, illegal parking and heavy vehicles, road safety activists and motorists have also stressed the need for safe, pothole-free roads, completion of pending works and easing congestion at accident-prone locations.

Alongside enforcement, traffic police are focusing on road-safety awareness among schoolchildren through the ‘Ek Diwas Shalesathi’ initiative conducted every Thursday.

So far, police have sensitised 1,17,191 students across 530 schools about traffic rules, causes of accidents and their consequences.
