Pune, 5th October 2026: The city’s new MH-61 vehicle registration series is being exhausted at a rapid pace, reflecting a sharp rise in two-wheeler purchases in Pune. The first series, MH-61 B, introduced for two-wheelers on September 1, was exhausted within nine days, while the subsequent MH-61 C series lasted only 14 days.

The MH-61 D series, which began on September 26, has already crossed 4,500 registrations, indicating that thousands of new two-wheelers are being added to Pune’s roads every day.

According to Regional Transport Office (RTO) data, the MH-61 B series ran from September 1 to September 9, followed by the MH-61 C series from September 10 to September 23. The MH-61 D series was launched on September 26 and has crossed 5,000 numbers, according to the latest figures.

Within a month of the launch of the MH-61 code, around 25,000 new two-wheelers have been registered in Pune. Under RTO norms, each series generally accommodates around 9,999 vehicle registrations, including regular and VIP numbers.

The rapid exhaustion of the first series was partly attributed to a backlog created after the earlier MH-12 ZZ series was exhausted. With a delay in the decision on the new series, registration of two-wheelers remained stalled for around eight days in the last week of August. Many buyers who had purchased new vehicles had to wait for the new registration series to be introduced.

Following directions from the Centre, the Pune RTO introduced the MH-61 series for the city. The first two-wheeler series, MH-61 B, was launched on September 1. The large number of vehicles awaiting registration in August resulted in the series being exhausted within just nine days.

However, even after the backlog was cleared, demand for new two-wheelers remained strong. The MH-61 C series, launched on September 10, was exhausted by September 23.

The rapid movement of the registration series — with two series exhausted and the third already halfway through within about a month — indicates the continued growth in two-wheeler sales in Pune and the increasing number of new vehicles being added to the city’s roads.
