Pune: Sassoon Hospital’s Code Blue Team Revives 2,067 Critically Ill Patients in Two Years
Pune, 13th October 2026: Sassoon General Hospital’s Code Blue team has successfully restored breathing and blood circulation in 2,067 critically ill patients over the past two years, highlighting the role of its emergency response system in handling life-threatening medical situations. The team was summoned 4,081 times from the hospital’s emergency, medicine and surgery departments during this period.
In one such case in August, the team revived a patient who suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed in the emergency department. After nearly an hour of resuscitation efforts, doctors managed to restore his heartbeat. The patient regained consciousness two days later and was discharged after undergoing angiography and angioplasty.
The patient had arrived at the hospital complaining of chest pain and profuse sweating. He collapsed shortly after sitting on a bed, prompting doctors to declare a Code Blue following an irregular heartbeat.
Doctors immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The team included resident doctors Shashank Kute and Siddhant, senior resident doctors Dhireshkumar and Abhishek, and Code Blue coordinator Gaurav Mahapure.
The patient was shifted to the intensive care unit and placed on ventilator support. Under the supervision of Dr Sanjay Mundhe, doctors administered clot-dissolving treatment. After regaining consciousness, the patient underwent angiography and angioplasty before being discharged.
Dr Dhananjay Ogle, chief coordinator of the Code Blue team, said the guidance of department heads Dr H B Prasad, Dr Rajeshwari Vora and Dr Surekha Shinde was crucial to the patient’s recovery. He also acknowledged the support of hospital dean Dr Eknath Pawar and medical superintendent Dr Yallappa Jadhav.
