Weekly One-Day Water Cut in Pune Starts Today, PMC Expects to Save 3.21 TMC
Pune, 15th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will suspend water supply across the city for one day every week from Thursday to conserve water amid concerns over deficient rainfall and the El Niño effect. The civic body expects the measure to save around 3.21 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water annually, helping it manage supplies until the next monsoon.
The decision, implemented in accordance with a state government directive, aims to reduce overall water consumption by around 10%. Pune receives an average of 1,750 million litres per day (MLD) from the Khadakwasla dam system.
PMC water supply department head Nandkishor Jagtap said the weekly shutdown could save approximately 91,000 million litres over a year. The civic body has sought an annual allocation of 21.34 TMC from the state water resources department to meet the city’s needs until the next monsoon.
The administration hopes the savings will help it plan water supply until the end of July next year, with additional allocation potentially meeting demand in August.
The PMC will also focus on plugging leakages, curbing wastage and increasing the reuse of treated wastewater. Residents have been urged to use water judiciously to help achieve the conservation target.
