Pune: 15-20 Students Booked For Blocking SPPU VC, Registrar’s Vehicle During Protest Against Campus Curbs
Pune, 6th November 2026: The Chatushrungi police have registered a case against 15 to 20 students for allegedly blocking the vehicle carrying Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) vice-chancellor Dr Suresh Gosavi and registrar Prafull Pawar and raising slogans on the campus on Wednesday evening (November 4).
The incident took place around 6.15pm when the two officials were leaving their offices in a government vehicle and heading towards the vice-chancellor’s residence. A group of student activists allegedly gathered illegally in front of the university’s main building, raised slogans and stopped the vehicle, preventing the officials from proceeding.
Following the confrontation, Gosavi and Pawar had to leave the vehicle and walk to their residence, police said.
A 50-year-old security supervisor with the university’s security department, Aba Tube, lodged a complaint with the police. The case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly obstructing public servants from discharging their official duties.
Those named in the complaint include student representatives Rahul Susane, Abhijit Gore, Ajay Bansode, Kiran Saindane and Mayur Jawale, along with 10 to 15 other activists.
The university’s management council had passed a resolution stating that student protests on the campus should be restricted to issues concerning the university and students. Several student organisations opposed the decision and staged protests against the proposed restrictions.
The university administration had assured the protesting students that the matter would be discussed at a management council meeting and a decision would be taken. Following the assurance, the organisations had suspended their agitation.
However, at Wednesday’s management council meeting, the university did not withdraw the circular imposing restrictions on protests. In response, students staged a sit-in outside the main building and blocked the vice-chancellor’s and registrar’s vehicle as they were leaving the campus.
