Accidents In Pune Increased By 113% After 2020, Pedestrians And Motorcyclists Major Victims

Pune 30th August 2023: The number of accidents reported in Pune district has increased by over 113% after 2020. A majority of fatal accidents were reported with motorcyclists and pedestrians, District Collector Rajesh Deshmukh said in the District Road Safety Committee meeting held on Wednesday. He urged motorcyclists to wear helmets while riding for their safety while saying that there is a need to create awareness among people to wear helmets.
“In Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad city as well as in rural areas, in locations with continuous accidents (black spots), causes of accidents and information about them should be scientifically analyzed to devise strategies for accident prevention; for this purpose, the relevant municipal corporation, public works department, as well as the transportation and police departments should conduct joint surveys” the District Collector said.
The Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, Bappa Bahir, Project Director of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) Sanjay Kadam, Regional Transport Officer (RTO)Sanjeev Bhor, Deputy Regional Transport Officer of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Atul Ade, Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Milind Barabhai, Executive Engineer of the National Highway of Public Works Department, Dhananjay Deshpande, and Assistant Police Commissioner of the Transportation Department, Machhindra Khade, were present for the meeting.
In the meeting, discussions were held about rectifying the ‘black spots.’ Information was provided about the highest number of accidents occurring in Pune city. Analyzing accident data on the integrated road accident information system known as ‘AERAD,’ identifying the causes of accidents, and exchanging ideas about strategies to be implemented at those locations were also suggested, Desmukh stated in the meeting.
PWD’s Chief Engineer Bappa Bahir said that a total of 63 Black Spots have been identified in Pune district. The joint action by various agencies has helped to reduce the number of accidents at Navale Bridge on the Pune-Bangalore Highway. Similarly, several initiatives have been also taken on the Pune-Ahmednagar Highway to reduce the number of accidents. he said.
