New Delhi, 16 June, 2023: The much-awaited epic mythological film, ‘Adipurush’ that was released today has sparked significant controversy. A petition concerning public interest has been filed in Delhi High Court against the film, which stands for a ban on the film owing to its disrespect to Lord Rama. Further, the film has also been halted from its release in Nepal.

The criticisms surrounding Adipurush have flooded since the release of the final trailer of the film, it has been met with protests from the Hindu Sena, who claim it mocks Lord Rama. Vishnu Gupta, National President of the Hindu Sena, wants the High Court to direct the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to refuse this film a certificate.

The petition claims that the film’s representation of Lord Rama differs from the depiction in the revered Hindu scriptures, the Ramayana, written by Maharishi Valmiki and Sant Tulsidas.

The petition further claims that the roles of Ravana, played by Saif Ali Khan, and Hanuman do not represent the core of Indian culture. Ravana was a Brahmin, and his terrifying visage with a beard is considered insulting and offensive.

Further, certain dialogues have generated controversy not only in India, but also reached Nepal. Certain dialogues, such as ‘Tere jali na?’ (Didn’t you burn?) and ‘Tel tere baap ka, aag tere baap ki…’, have raised concerns.

In Nepal, critics have rejected the dialogue of Sita as the ‘daughter of India’, as her birthplace was in Janakpur (present day Nepal).

The most-anticipated film of the year, with one of the biggest budgets in Indian Industry, has been surrounded by critics and rejections.
