After Many Goof-ups, Pune University To Develop Its Online Exam System
Pune, October 28, 2020: For the first time in the history of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) academic examinations are held on a digital platform. The final year examination for SPPU students held online was disrupted with many technical snags. SPPU has decided, ‘no more’– technical glitches can’t be repeated, while online examinations are making an important entry in future courses. The university is planning to establish an independent digital examination system as a permanent solution to the recent technical problems faced by the final year students.
As many as 13,000 and more complaints related to online technical glitches like options for answers weren’t visible, questions weren’t visible, students were unable to solve the entire paper or some faced problems while submitting the answer-sheet were registered with the university. To avoid such problems in future, the varsity is underway developing its examination system.
As per the Supreme Court’s ruling on the final year examination and the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines, the universities were directed to conduct the final year examinations either online or offline examinations. Since it was for the first time university was to hold the examination online and in lesser time duration, SPPU had hired an agency to conduct the examination. However, soon after the online examinations commenced, SPPU started to receive distressed calls from students. Following which, the university had also released a feedback form — over 13,000 students responded with several complaints about various technical problems faced during the examination which created chaos.
Mathematics students complained that they couldn’t see the questions containing figures or shapes. Nonetheless, a few exams have the same title because of which there were some confusions. Realising that formulating questions for online examination is an important part, SPPU will be providing a training session for the professors to set the online question papers.
Another factor is that while dependent on the agency for holding the examination, if any problem arises, then there is no guarantee it will be resolved immediately even after the complaint is registered with them. If the university has its well-developed examination system, then it will be able to act and respond immediately to the problems, stated a source.
