Pune – About a week after 24 year old software engineer Rasila Raju was murdered by a security guard inside the Infosys office in Hinjawadi phase 2, the company has come out with fresh guidelines for safety of all employees.

Rasila was strangulated to death on Sunday when she was working alone. Police have arrested the security guard Bhaben Saikia from Assam. He killed her as she had warned him for continuously staring.

In a statement on Friday, Infosys said, “All of us at Infosys are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our friend and colleague Rasila. She was a dedicated employee and a cheerful friend to all those who knew her – a colleague with tremendous potential in front of her. Our deepest heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends, and all of her loved ones, as their grief and loss are truly unimaginable. We have been providing the police all the support they required in their investigation and they have done an excellent job with their swift response to apprehend the culprit. In addition, we continue every effort to provide support to Rasila’s grieving family.”

The company further said, “we have always been focused and committed to the safety of our employees. The unfortunate incident on January 29 however is a reminder that nothing can be taken for granted and no security measure is fool proof.”

The company has listed following  additional steps with immediate effect to further strengthen the security at all campuses:

·       A relook at rosters, especially where single team members are required. We are trying to ensure that no employee works alone on a shift. In unavoidable situations, we are looking at additional security (including female security guards) being deployed, as well as increasing the frequency of floor walks by security personnel.

·       Extension of work from home facility, including laptops, in situations where remote working is feasible.

·       Increase in deployment of panic buttons across buildings as well as rapid response teams to take immediate action.

In addition we are immediately carrying out a complete review of our security procedures by an expert third party consultant. We are also collaborating with local police across our development centers and seeking their advice on additional security measures that we can implement. In addition, we have already invited all our employees to share any recommendation that can help us improve the safety of their work environments and have received several suggestion that are being reviewed by our security teams.

All these measures, are in addition to existing security measures that we currently have deployed at all our campuses:

·       We have a common safety helpline across all our DCs that is manned 24X7, in addition we have an Infosys Emergency App that has been made available to all India locations

·       We have extensive CCTV coverage across our campuses, and we continuously assess the need to add more surveillance on campuses as we grown in space and size

·       Entry onto campuses is strictly monitored by security and there is a security presence at each of our buildings

·       A Safety Committee in each of our Development Centers, reviews safety measures at campuses periodically

·       We have mandatory background checks for vendor employees, sub-cons, housekeeping staff and rotating vendor staffs

·       We undertake periodic mail communication to all employees on safety and have several programs aimed to help employees by providing personal safety tips and self-defense program/sessions

·       We also encourage all employees to leave before 8:00 PM and ensure safe commute options for women employees. This includes provisions to drop women employees back at their residence (also called the last mile) if they leave office post 8:00 PM.

“Our endeavor continues to be to make Infosys the safest and best place to work, and we aim to continuously review our existing measures to meet this goal”, the company further stated.
