Wanowrie, 12th May 2025: A 20-year-old medical student from AIIMS Bhopal was found dead in the bathroom of the boys’ hostel at the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune on Monday morning, in what police believe to be a case of suicide.

The deceased, identified as Utkarsh Mahadev Shingane, a resident of Bhagyanagar in Beed district, had come to AFMC on May 8 to participate in an event and had stayed on campus due to a programme being held at the college.

Senior Police Inspector Satyajit Admane of Wanowrie Police Station said, “We received a call from the family stating that their son had sent a suicide note through WhatsApp and they feared he might harm himself. Based on the alert, AFMC authorities searched the premises and found the student in the bathroom of the boys’ hostel. He was sitting on the commode with blood on the floor and a knife nearby. His belongings were placed behind him.”

Inspector Admane confirmed that doctors from AFMC examined the student on-site and declared him dead. “Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. The student had been undergoing treatment for depression for the past year, reportedly due to academic stress. He was receiving psychiatric care at AIIMS Bhopal,” Admane added.

According to preliminary findings, Shingane had allegedly purchased the knife online and used it to stab himself in the chest. He had also updated his WhatsApp display picture with a suicide note, which his family saw before alerting the authorities.

“There is no immediate suspicion of foul play, but further investigation is underway,” said Admane.
An ambulance was called to the spot to take the body for post-mortem examination. Police are continuing their probe and have reached out to AIIMS Bhopal and the student’s family for further details.
