Airline Pilots’ Association Criticizes Ahmedabad Crash Probe, Citing Bias and Lack of Transparency
New Delhi, 12th July 2025: The Airline Pilots’ Association of India (ALPA-India) has strongly criticized the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau’s (AAIB) preliminary findings on the 12th June Air India flight 171 crash, alleging the investigation is biased and lacks transparency.
In a statement released Saturday, ALPA-India said, “The tone and direction of the investigation suggest a bias toward pilot error. We categorically reject this presumption and insist on a fair, fact-based inquiry.” The association expressed concern that the preliminary report, which was leaked to the media earlier this week, lacked official attribution and was released “without any responsible official signature.”
The 12th June crash involved Air India flight 171, which was en route from Mumbai to Delhi when it crashed during its approach, resulting in multiple injuries and significant damage to the aircraft. The AAIB’s preliminary report, according to media sources, points to possible pilot error as a contributing factor, though a full investigation is ongoing.
ALPA-India further criticized the investigation process, stating, “There is lack of transparency in investigation as investigations continue to be shrouded in secrecy, undermining credibility and public trust. Qualified, experienced personnel, especially line pilots, are still not being included in the investigation team.”
Aviation experts have long emphasized the importance of independent, transparent investigations in the wake of air accidents. According to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines, accident inquiries should be conducted impartially, with input from technical experts, including active pilots, to ensure comprehensive findings and maintain public confidence in air safety.
The AAIB has not yet responded to ALPA-India’s allegations. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has also declined to comment, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Public scrutiny has intensified following recent high-profile air incidents in India, putting additional pressure on authorities to ensure accountability and transparency. As the investigation continues, ALPA-India has called for the inclusion of experienced line pilots and greater openness in the process.
