Ajit Pawar or Chandrakant Patil? BJP, NCP Workers Speculate Future of Pune’s Guardian Minister
By Tikam Shekhawat
Pune, 27th November 2024: Following the recently concluded Maharashtra assembly elections, the political landscape in Pune is heating up as the MLAs of the Mahayuti parties intensify their lobbying efforts for ministerial positions. Amidst this, workers from both the BJP and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) have begun speculating on who will take the key role of the Guardian Minister for Pune district.
Placards featuring Ajit Pawar’s name as the future chief minister have appeared across Pune, with his supporters urging his elevation to the top post. At the same time, there is ongoing discussion about whether Ajit Pawar, who has served as Pune’s Guardian Minister for an extended period, will continue in the role. His leadership in this capacity has been a topic of interest, especially in the context of the upcoming local body elections.
Ajit Pawar has been the longest-serving Guardian Minister of Pune, having held the post for several years. In the past, the position was also held by the late Girish Bapat (2014) and current Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil (2022). The Guardian Minister’s role is crucial not just for overseeing administrative functions but also for influencing decisions related to the district planning committee, which plays a pivotal role in resource allocation and development projects in Pune.
The Guardian Minister also has the authority to appoint members to the district planning committee, further solidifying their control over district-level projects. While Ajit Pawar has worked hard in recent years to earn the respect of Pune’s residents and has overseen significant development, speculation continues about whether he will retain the post after the elections. Despite his dominance in the district with a strong support base and a recent electoral victory in Pune, the possibility of a shift in political decisions within the Mahayuti alliance cannot be ruled out.
Chandrakant Patil, who briefly held the position of Guardian Minister under the Mahayuti government, could also be in the running for the role, depending on political negotiations. With the looming Pune Municipal Corporation, Zilla Parishad, and municipal elections, the Guardian Minister post is seen as crucial for gaining political leverage in the region.
As the political maneuvering continues, all eyes are on Ajit Pawar’s future role, and whether he will continue as the face of development in Pune or if a new leader will rise to take on the significant responsibility.
