All legal efforts taken by the state for reservation to backward class in promotion : Chief Minister Thackeray

Mumbai, March 14, 2020: The matter of reservation to the backward class in promotions in Maharashtra is sub-judice with the apex court. The state government has appointed senior and renowned lawyers to see that the reservation in promotions is upheld. State government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the reservation sustains. This was stated by Chief Minister Mr Uddhav Thackeray in the state legislative council, today.

 He was replying to the question raised through the call attention notice by member Hari Singh Rathore in the Legislative Council. The Chief Minister further said that the state government is with all the backward community people with full might. He said that the state had implemented the reservation in promotion to the employees who are either directly recruited or those who got consequential seniority in the year 2004. He said that the High Court has abrogated this provision in promotions by the order of 4th August 2017.

 The chief minister said that the state government has challenged this verdict in Supreme Court and prayed for stay on the high court’s decision but the apex court has not yet granted the stay. He said that the verdicts given by the apex court in other cases cannot be implemented in the Maharashtra state. He also said that the Attorney General had said that the petition related to promotion is pending in Supreme Court so presently reservations to the backward class employees and officers cannot be given in promotions .Presently, the promotions to open category employees are being given and those belonging to backward classes are also promoted as per their seniority of service, the chief minister added.
