All Permit Rooms in Pune to Remain Shut on July 14 as Protest Against Liquor Price Hike: PRAHA
Pune, 13th July 2025: The Pune Restaurant and Hoteliers Association (PRAHA) has announced a symbolic statewide bandh of all permit rooms on Monday, July 14, in protest against the sharp hike in liquor rates, Value Added Tax (VAT), and license fees imposed by the Maharashtra government.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday, PRAHA President Ganesh Shetty said, “We are left with no choice but to shut down permit rooms for a day to express our opposition to the exorbitant increase in liquor prices, VAT, and license fees. This protest is not just for Pune but will be observed across Maharashtra.”
Shetty further added, “This unjust hike is threatening the survival of small and medium permit room operators. We appeal to the government to reconsider these decisions, which are affecting both businesses and employees dependent on this industry.”

The press conference, held on July 12, was well attended by media representatives and senior members of PRAHA. Alongside President Ganesh Shetty, Vice Presidents Vishwanath Poojary and Jawahar Chorge, Treasurer Mohan Shetty, and Secretary Rajesh Shetty addressed the media.
PRAHA has appealed to all its members and hospitality stakeholders to spread the word and ensure total participation in the closure to make the protest impactful.
“We’ve received excellent support from journalists and expect strong solidarity from permit room owners. This protest is a peaceful yet firm stand for the rights of our fraternity,” Shetty concluded.
