Pune, 19th June 2023: A powerful demonstration was organised yesterday as animal lovers, animal rights activists, and conscious citizens gathered at Sambhaji Park on JM Road to protest against the proposed “Live Animal Import/Export Bill 2023.” The bill, if passed, would allow the import and export of living animals with other countries, raising concerns about the welfare and rights of animals, they claimed.

Protesters voiced their opposition to the transportation of live animals on ships and vehicles, arguing that it goes against the fundamental rights of animals, reducing them to mere commodities. They highlighted the deplorable treatment that animals endure during transport, such as being deprived of food and water throughout the journey. Tragically, many animals suffer and die from suffocation, heat, starvation, trauma, and other inhumane conditions. Disturbingly, dead animals are often discarded at sea along the way.

Citing the banning of live animal import/export by countries like New Zealand, protesters questioned how such a law could be proposed in India, a nation historically associated with the principle of Ahimsa (non-violence) towards all living beings.

One of the main grievances expressed by the protesters is the inadequate time given by the government for public discussion and debate on the bill. With a mere 10-day period allocated, concerns have been raised about the government’s intentions, with some suspecting that it may be influenced by the meat industry lobby.

The opposition to the bill has gained significant momentum online, with a widespread social media movement rallying people from all walks of life to voice their objections. Individuals from various backgrounds have come together to express their concerns, highlighting the need to protect animal rights and prevent the potential harm that could arise from the proposed legislation.

As the voices of dissent grow louder, animal rights activists and concerned citizens continue their fight against the “Live Animal Import/Export Bill 2023,” urging the government to reconsider its stance and prioritize the welfare of living beings. The debate surrounding this contentious bill is far from over, as the public outcry for compassion and justice for animals resonates throughout the country.
