ARMY BOOSTS AND READJUSTS RELIEF EFFORTS IN CHENNAI

Punekar News's photo.With the weather conditions being stabilized over the past couple of days, the overall flood situation has improved. Notwithstanding this, the Army is using this window by deploying additional teams in various parts of the metro to speed up the evacuation process and also carry out extensive relief operations. While some areas continue to be flooded, some of the roads have opened up to allow limited traffic. Since the infrastructure is still to recover from disruption, civic services and supplies are yet to return to normal.

Teams have fanned out to cover areas in the city where the supply of food and water is becoming critical to distribute cooked food packets and drinking water. In addition, the army medical teams have also been located in critical areas to render essential medical assistance. In ongoing operations, the teams have Punekar News's photo.covered Manapakkam, Vellacherry, SIDCO Nagar, Perungudi, Kolathur apart from deeply affected areas such as Kothupuram, and Defence Colony. Till now the relief teams have rescued over 7000 people by boats, evacuated over 9000 people in vehicles and distributed more than 27000 food packets. Medical teams have rendered aid to over 5000 people. Currently 60 relief teams are operating in different parts of Chennai and 10 more teams are being staged to different areas from Arakkonam airport where they were airlifted earlier.
