Budhwar Peth, 26th October 2023: Pune City Police have arrested a 25-year-old Army Jawan for assaulting a traffic policeman who had previously fined him for triple seat driving. The accused Jawan reportedly struck the cop on the head with a cement block.

The injured policeman, identified as Romesh Dhawre, prompted an FIR to be registered against Sepoy Vaibhav Sambhaji Mangate, a native of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, based on a complaint filed by traffic police officer Pankaj Bhopale at the Faraskhana police station.

The incident occurred yesterday around 7 pm at Budhwar Chowk near the Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati temple.

According to the FIR, Dhawre had taken action against Mangate approximately one and a half months ago for triple seat driving, resulting in arguments and physical confrontation. Allegedly incensed by this prior incident, Mangate actively sought out Dhawre and assaulted him with a cement block to the head, as detailed in Bhopale’s complaint. Dhawre was accompanied by Bhopale during the assault and was subsequently transported to a hospital for medical attention.

Subsequently, the police apprehended Mangate, who now faces charges under sections 307 (attempt to murder), (voluntarily causing grievous hurt to deter public servant from his duty), and 353 (obstructing a public servant from discharging official duty) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Note: This report will be updated after receiving a statement from the Army.
